The Custom is the better-behaved van of the two on the test record, and the cheaper one on wear items — pads, discs, dampers, bulbs. On the jobs that hurt, it goes the other way: its clutch, alternator and particulate filter all cost more than the equivalents on the larger, older Transit.
That is not a size effect. It is the age of the design, and section two sets out exactly which components drive it.

Cheapest first, which is also the order a fault should be diagnosed in. The knock over sharp bumps is far more likely to be a pair of drop links than a pair of dampers, and the difference is roughly threefold.

The cheap end is genuinely cheap
Drop links at £80 to £140 are the most common suspension repair in the country and the first thing to check when a Custom knocks over drain covers and cats’ eyes. Front pads at £130 to £210 are the cheapest brake job of any van in our data — the Custom’s discs are smaller than the full-size Transit’s and the parts follow.
That matters because these are the jobs you meet most often. Suspension and brakes together account for the largest share of van failures, and on a Custom both sit at the affordable end of the list.
Where it stops being cheap
Three jobs run past £500: the clutch, the particulate filter and the turbo. All three are also connected on a diesel van. A worn turbo pushes oil downstream into the filter and blocks it; a blocked filter pushes back-pressure into the turbo and kills it. If one has failed, have the other checked in the same visit rather than discovering it three months later.
The filter has two rows because it has two answers, and the gap between them is £240. A professional clean restores a structurally sound filter; only a cracked or melted substrate needs replacing. There is no cambelt or water pump price here. The Custom has been sold with the 2.2 TDCi and the 2.0 EcoBlue, and the timing arrangement and water pump drive differ between them. Those differences change the labour by a factor of several.
A single Custom-wide figure would be wrong for most readers, so we would rather show nothing than a number that only applies to some vans. Pricing them properly needs the engine, not the model.
Custom or full-size Transit
The two vans split cleanly, and not in the direction size would suggest. The Custom is cheaper on the jobs you meet often and dearer on the ones that hurt.

Three jobs go the wrong way, and they have one thing in common
The clutch, the alternator and the particulate filter. On a smaller vehicle with shorter labour times, all three should be cheaper. All three are dearer, and the reason is the same in each case: the Custom is a newer design carrying newer components.
The clutch
Kits for the Custom are almost entirely dual mass flywheel assemblies with a concentric slave cylinder. The larger Transit’s catalogue still includes simpler kits without a dual mass flywheel, which pulls its lower band down.

The 2.0 EcoBlue runs a 250-amp unit. Older Transit generations, which make up much of that model’s parts catalogue, use lower-output alternators that cost less to replace.

Filters built to the later emissions standard are dearer than those fitted to the earlier Transits. The clean is cheaper on a Custom because the labour is shorter; the replacement is dearer because the part is.

Brakes and suspension, which is the half of the list you meet most often. Front pads are £130 to £210 against £160 to £260, the largest proportional gap in the table. Pads and discs, dampers and the professional filter clean all come in lower, and the reason is mechanical rather than generational: smaller discs, lighter dampers, shorter labour.
Only the front-wheel-drive layout is worth noting separately. Every Custom is front-wheel drive, while the larger Transit has been sold in both front- and rear-wheel-drive form — and a rear-wheel-drive clutch needs the propshaft, subframe and steering column disturbed. That is why the Custom’s clutch labour is shorter even though its parts are dearer.
Over a few ordinary years of ownership — pads, discs, a set of dampers, the occasional drop link — the Custom is the cheaper van, and by a clear margin on the brake items.
Over one bad year, it is not. A clutch, a filter and an alternator on a Custom come to more than the same three on the bigger van, despite the smaller vehicle and the shorter labour.
What it fails on, and how often
A price list tells you what a job costs. The national test record tells you whether you will need it — and on this measure the Custom is one of the better vans on the road.
Sixth out of thirty-two
At its first MOT, 17.56% of Transit Customs fail. The full-size Transit fails 23.76% at the same age. Placed against all thirty-two van models we have ranked, that puts the Custom in the top six while the larger van sits twentieth — a gap of more than six percentage points between two vehicles wearing the same badge.
The gap widens rather than closes as the vans age. By seven years old it is more than nine percentage points. On the evidence available, the Custom is the better-behaved of the two throughout the part of its life we can measure properly.
The Custom is a younger model than the Transit, so relatively few examples have reached twelve years and been tested. Its figures for that age band rest on a much thinner sample than the larger van’s, and we do not use them here in either direction.
What can be said is that up to around eleven years, on a large and reliable sample, the Custom fails less often. What happens to a fifteen-year-old Custom is a question the data cannot yet answer.

Nearly one failed item in five is suspension, and on a Custom that maps to three of the cheapest jobs on the list: drop links at £80, springs at £210, dampers at £220. The category that costs vans the most money is the one this van does most affordably.
Lighting is the other lesson. Headlamps and marker lamps together take 11.74% of failed items, and almost all of that is a bulb. Ten minutes with a torch before the test removes roughly a ninth of the national failure risk for a few pounds — and a Custom carries more marker lamps than a car, mounted where they collect road spray.
They are shares of what vans fail on, not the odds of failing. A category can take a smaller share while occurring more frequently, because older vans fail more often overall. The table tells you where to spend attention, not that your Custom has an 18.89% chance of a suspension failure.
They are also figures for light commercial vehicles as a group rather than for the Custom alone. Our processing of the national dataset does not allow a reliable category breakdown by model, so we have not attempted one. The failure rates above — 17.56%, the ranking position, the gap against the Transit — are genuinely Custom-only.

Why this job is the interesting one
Every other price on this page moves in the direction you would expect from a smaller van: shorter labour, smaller parts, lower total. The clutch does both at once and ends up dearer than the larger Transit’s anyway.

Where each number comes from
Parts are taken from published catalogue prices for the Custom specifically, in the premium aftermarket band — the brands an independent garage actually fits. For a clutch that means LuK, Sachs and Valeo, the companies that supply the manufacturers, so these are factory-grade parts at aftermarket prices rather than budget substitutes.
Labour rate is £50 to £80 an hour for an independent garage, with £65 as the midpoint. Substitute your own local rate if you know it — the arithmetic above is the whole calculation, and £15 an hour across a four-hour job moves the total by £60. Main dealers charge £120 to £180, which is where the 50% differential in the tables comes from.
Labour time is the figure we are least able to source directly, and we would rather say so. Workshop repair times are licensed commercial data. The one published figure we have for this family of vans is three hours forty-five minutes for a clutch on a front-wheel-drive 2.2 TDCi; the four hours used here is our estimate for the Custom, and every other time on this page comes from the equivalent job in our car cost guides.
The published van time sits inside the range for a family hatchback: three hours forty-five against three to five for a Ford Fiesta. A van is not slower to work on than a car — it has a bigger engine bay and more room around the components.
So the price gap between a van and a car lives in the parts rather than the hours, and the parts figures here are catalogue prices for the Custom itself. If anything some van jobs run marginally longer than the car equivalent, which would push these estimates up rather than down.
They are not quotes. A garage prices your specific van, its engine variant, its condition and whatever it finds when the gearbox comes off — none of which a page can know. A decade of salted roads is a labour multiplier that does not appear in any parts catalogue.
What they are good for is judging whether a quote sits in the right range. If it falls well outside, that is a reason to ask what is driving it rather than proof that anyone is wrong.

Does a Transit Custom need a class 7 MOT?
It depends on the individual vehicle, not the model. Class 7 applies to goods vehicles with a design gross weight over 3,000kg, and the Custom is sold in variants on both sides of that line. Published lists that assign the model to one class or the other contradict one another for exactly that reason — the answer is on the manufacturer’s plate or the V5C.
