Start at the cheap end
Drop links are the most common suspension repair in the country and the cheapest item on this list. A rattling knock over small sharp bumps — drain covers, cats’ eyes — is almost always a drop link, not a damper. Bouncing, floatiness or a visible oil film down the damper body is what points at shock absorbers, and only then.
The same order applies to brakes. A squeal is the wear indicator doing its job and means a pads-only job at £160–£260. A grind means the pad material has gone and the backing plate is machining the discs, which turns it into a £240–£400 job. The gap between those two numbers is the price of waiting.
Where the real money is
Three jobs on this list run past £480: the clutch, the DPF and the turbo. All three are also connected, which is worth knowing before agreeing to any of them. A worn turbo pushes oil downstream into the DPF and blocks it; a blocked DPF pushes back-pressure into the turbo and kills it. If one has failed, have the other checked in the same visit.
The DPF has two rows because it has two answers, and the gap between them is £200. A professional clean restores a structurally sound filter; only a cracked or melted substrate needs replacing. There is no cambelt or water pump price on this page, and that is not an oversight. The Transit has been sold with a timing chain, a conventional belt and an oil-immersed wet belt depending on the engine, and the water pump is driven by a gear on some and by the timing belt on others.
Those differences change the labour by a factor of several, so a single Transit-wide figure would be wrong for most readers. Pricing them properly needs the engine, not the model. Until we can do that, we would rather show nothing than show a number that only applies to some Transits.
What a Transit actually fails on
A price list tells you what a job costs. It says nothing about whether you will need it. This is the other half, taken from 15.2 million recorded Transit tests and every advisory written on them.

Suspension is where the money goes
Nearly one failed item in five is suspension or an axle component — the largest single category by a clear margin, and almost twice the share of brakes behind it. On the price list above that maps to three jobs spanning £80 to £430, which is why the order you diagnose them in matters more here than anywhere else on the van.
The second-largest group is cheaper than most owners expect. Headlamps and marker lamps together account for 11.74% of failed items, and almost all of that is a bulb. Ten minutes with a torch before the test removes a ninth of the national failure risk at a cost of a few pounds.
Every figure in that table is a slice of what vans fail on, not how often they fail. A category can take a smaller share of failures while still occurring more frequently, simply because older vans fail more often overall.
What the table tells you is where to spend attention and money. It does not tell you your Transit has a 18.89% chance of a suspension failure.
The Transit’s own numbers
Of the five million advisories written on Transits in the record, 12.76% had turned into a failure by the vehicle’s next test, and 34.50% were still there unfixed. That second figure is the more useful one: on a third of Transits, the warning on the certificate is simply carried forward another year.
Suspension advisories specifically convert at 23.11% on a Transit, against a national average across all vehicles of 18.73%. An advisory on a Transit’s suspension is a stronger signal than the same words on a car, and it points at the category that already accounts for the largest share of failures.
The category shares above are for light commercial vehicles as a group, not for the Transit alone. Our processing of the national dataset aggregates defects at a level that does not allow a reliable model-by-model breakdown, so we have not attempted one.
The Transit-specific figures — failure rates by age, advisory conversion, the suspension number — are genuinely Transit-only. Where a figure covers all vans, we have said so.
How it changes with age
The price list does not change as a Transit ages. Which jobs you end up paying for does, and so does the likelihood of paying for any of them at all.

At twelve years and over, the Transit records a 37.27% failure rate. That is the highest figure of any of the thirty-two van models we ranked — worse than the Vivaro, the Combo and the Primastar, all of which start out further down the table.
It adds 10.92 percentage points between the three-to-six band and twelve years, which is a steeper decline than most. The Transit is the most common van in Britain and it does not age well. Anyone selling you one should be able to discuss that; the full ranking across all thirty-two models is in which vans hold up best.
Which jobs come due, and when
Suspension climbs from 13.44% of failed items on a young van to 21.15% past twelve years. Structure more than doubles over the same span, from 4.11% to 9.15%. Together those two categories go from under a fifth of failures to nearly a third, and both sit at the expensive end of any workshop’s price list.
Steering peaks in the middle band at 4.56% and then eases. Brake condition barely moves at all: 4.62%, then 5.29%, then 4.91%. That makes brakes the one item where a three-year-old Transit deserves exactly the same attention as a twelve-year-old one, and the one price on the list above that stays relevant for the whole life of the vehicle.
3 to 6 years
Budget for lamps, pads and the occasional drop link. Most of what fails at this age sits at the cheap end of the price list, and a walk-round before the test covers a good share of it.

Suspension and steering start deciding the outcome, and the failure rate jumps seven points. This is also where a clutch or a turbo becomes plausible on a working van.

More than one test in three failsMileage is not the guide most people think
A Transit reaches its first test with a median of 55,000 miles, which is roughly what a car covers in six years. That sounds like the number to judge a used one on, and it is weaker than it looks: across thirty-two van models, the correlation between mileage and failure rate is 0.333.
The Sprinter covers 95,000 miles by its first test and fails less often than the Transit at 55,000. Distance travelled explains far less than the vehicle’s own test history does, which we set out in full in average van mileage.
Young: check the lamps and price the pads. Middle: read last year’s advisories and get suspension looked at properly, because that is where the failure rate jump comes from. Old: book the ramp rather than the torch, and expect roughly one test in three to fail.

Every figure on this page is built from three things you can check: what the parts cost, how long the job takes, and what an independent garage charges an hour. Here is one worked out in full.

Sits in the middle of the £230–£430 range in the table above. A budget parts choice at the bottom of the labour rate lands near £230; premium dampers at £80 an hour reach £430.
Where each number comes from
Parts are taken from published catalogue prices for the Transit specifically, using the premium aftermarket band rather than the extremes. That means the brands an independent garage actually fits — KYB, Sachs and Monroe for dampers, Brembo, ATE and TRW for brakes, Gates and INA for belts. These are the companies that supply the manufacturers, so they are factory-grade parts at aftermarket prices, not budget substitutes.
Labour rate is £50 to £80 an hour for an independent garage, with £65 used as the midpoint. If you know your local rate, substitute it: the arithmetic above is the whole calculation, and a £15 difference in hourly rate moves a 2.5-hour job by £38. Main dealers charge £120 to £180, which is where the 50% differential in the table comes from.
Labour time is the number we are least able to source directly, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Workshop repair times are licensed commercial data. We have one published figure specific to the Transit — three hours forty-five minutes for a clutch on the front-wheel-drive 2.2 TDCi — and for the remaining jobs we use the time for a comparable vehicle from our own car cost guides.
The one Transit time we do have sits inside the range for a family hatchback: three hours forty-five against three to five for a Ford Fiesta. A van is not slower to work on than a car — it has a bigger engine bay and more room around the components.
That means the price difference between a van and a car lives in the parts, not the hours, and the parts figures here are catalogue prices for the Transit itself. It also means the assumption is conservative rather than convenient: if anything, some van jobs will take marginally longer than the car equivalent, which would push these estimates up, not down.
Why the ranges are the width they are
The spread between the low and high figure is not arbitrary. It reflects how much room there is between a budget and a premium choice on that particular job, and we set it to match the equivalent job in our car cost guides — narrow on brakes and belts, where parts are commodities, wider on suspension, where the gap between a budget damper and a premium one is largest.
They are not quotes. A garage prices your specific van, its condition, its engine variant and what it finds when the wheel comes off, none of which a page can know. Corrosion in particular is a labour multiplier on any vehicle that has spent a decade on salted roads, and it does not show up in a parts catalogue.
What these figures are good for is knowing whether the quote you have been given is in the right postcode. If it sits well outside the range above, that is a reason to ask what is driving it — not proof that anyone is wrong.
Transit against the alternatives
Two comparisons are worth making before you accept a quote: the Transit against its smaller sibling, and the Transit against an ordinary car. Both produce results people find surprising.

The Custom is not simply a smaller Transit
On most jobs it costs slightly less, as you would expect from a smaller vehicle with shorter labour times. On two it costs more, and the reason is not size but age of design. The Custom’s 2.0 EcoBlue runs a 250-amp alternator and a filter built to a later emissions standard, both of which are dearer parts than the equivalents on the older Transit generations that dominate the catalogue.
That is worth knowing if you are choosing between the two. The Custom is cheaper to run on wear items and dearer on the electronics and emissions equipment, which is roughly the opposite of the assumption most buyers start with.
Where the Custom is clearly ahead
At its first test the Transit Custom fails 17.56% of the time against 23.76% for the full-size Transit — a gap of over six percentage points on identical-age vehicles. Placed in our ranking of thirty-two van models, that puts the Custom in the top six while the Transit sits twentieth.
The gap widens to more than nine points by seven years before closing again on the oldest vehicles, though the Custom is a younger model and its twelve-plus figures rest on far fewer tests, so that convergence should be treated as suggestive rather than settled. Against a car, the gap is smaller than you would think
A Transit turbo costs £680–£1,190 and a Fiesta turbo £650–£1,100. A DPF replacement is within a few pounds either way. On the big-ticket jobs, running a Transit costs very little more than running a small hatchback, because the expensive components are similar and the labour is comparable.
The gap shows up on suspension, where the Transit runs £230–£430 against the Fiesta’s £160–£300. Heavier vehicle, heavier dampers, longer job. It is also the category that accounts for the largest share of van failures, so it is the difference you will meet most often.
None of this tells you much about the specific van in front of you. Across our analysis, the spread between the best and worst van model at the same age is nearly sixteen percentage points, but an individual vehicle’s own record of passes, failures and repeated advisories is a better guide than any model average.

A van can be tested up to a month minus one day before expiry while keeping the same anniversary date. On a Transit that window matters, because a failure means finding a slot with the vehicle already off the road.

On the cheap end of the list the spread between garages is small in absolute terms — a few pounds on drop links. On the expensive end it is not. A clutch spans £480 to £810 at independent rates alone, and the same job at a main dealer reaches £1,220. That is a £740 spread on one repair, driven mostly by hourly rate rather than by parts.
The jobs worth getting three quotes for are the clutch, the turbo and a DPF replacement. Everything under about £300 is usually not worth the phone calls, with one exception: if a garage has quoted discs when you only expected pads, ask for the measured thickness against the stamped minimum before agreeing. Bundle what shares a labour bill
Anything behind the gearbox shares one strip-down, so a dual mass flywheel done alongside a clutch costs parts only rather than the full labour twice. The same logic applies across the front axle: shocks and springs due together, or a drop link replaced while the wheel is already off, collapse the marginal labour to almost nothing.
The one that catches people out is the turbo and the DPF. They are connected — a worn turbo feeds oil into the filter, a blocked filter pushes pressure back into the turbo — so if either has failed, having the other checked in the same visit is cheaper than discovering it three months later.
