How to tell for yourself, without paying anyone

Start with the service schedule, not the internet. Your handbook has a maintenance table, and if the engine has a cambelt there will be a line for it with a mileage and an age limit. No line means no scheduled belt — which almost always means a chain. This is the single most reliable check available to an owner, and it takes two minutes.

Then confirm the engine, not the model. Every answer in this field depends on which engine is in front of the bulkhead, and the badge on the boot lid frequently lies about it. A “1.2 TSI” Polo can mean two different engines built years apart with two different timing systems. The engine code section below covers where to find yours.

A visual check is possible but limited. On many transverse engines you can see a plastic timing cover at one end of the block, usually on the offside. A wide ribbed cover often houses a belt; a slim metal one usually houses a chain. It is a hint, not proof — some belt covers are metal and some engines hide the whole assembly behind the mounts. Never let a visual guess override the service schedule.

Why the same model has both

Belts are cheaper to make, quieter and lighter; chains last longer and need no scheduled replacement. Manufacturers have swung between the two repeatedly as emissions rules, cost targets and warranty claims shifted, and they rarely did it at a clean generation boundary. The Astra is the clearest case in this list: belt, then an all-chain generation, then a wet belt in the newest cars — three answers under one nameplate.

The practical consequence for an owner is that year and model together are often not enough. Two cars built the same year, same badge, can carry either system depending on which engine the first buyer specified. This is exactly why the checker above asks for the engine, and why it declines to answer when the engine itself is ambiguous. Any tool that gives you a confident single answer from a registration plate alone is guessing on your behalf, because the DVLA record contains engine capacity and fuel type — not the engine code that actually decides this.

It is also why the most useful question you can put to a garage is a narrow one: which engine code is on my car, and does that one have a belt? A good mechanic reads it off the block or the VIN in under a minute. A quote for a cambelt on a chain engine falls apart the moment that question is asked out loud.

The third answer: wet belts

A wet belt runs inside the engine, immersed in oil. Ford’s 1.0 EcoBoost and the PSA 1.2 PureTech are the two you will meet most often in the UK, and between them they cover a large slice of the Fiesta, Focus, Corsa and Astra market. If your car has one, “do I have a belt?” has a different answer than you were expecting: yes, and it is the expensive kind.

Two things make wet belts their own category rather than a variation on the theme. The belt degrades into the oil rather than simply wearing thin, and the debris can block the oil pick-up and starve the engine — a failure mode that damages the engine without the belt ever snapping. And the intervals have moved: several of these engines were sold with a schedule that manufacturers have since shortened, so the figure printed in an older handbook may no longer be the current advice. If the checker returns “wet belt”, the practical advice differs from a conventional belt in one important way: the oil specification matters as much as the interval. The wrong oil attacks the belt directly. Whoever services the car, insist the invoice records the exact specification used.

6 places your engine identity is hiding

Every reliable answer starts with the engine, so it is worth knowing where the evidence lives. In rough order of how quickly you can get to it:

  1. The service schedule in the handbook

    A maintenance table listing a timing belt interval settles it immediately. No belt line, no scheduled belt.

    Reliability: highest available to an owner. Time: two minutes.
  2. The V5C registration document

    Section 4 carries engine capacity and often the engine number. Capacity alone rarely decides the question, but combined with the model year it narrows the field considerably.

    Reliability: partial — capacity is not the engine code.
  3. The engine code stamped on the block

    Usually on a machined pad on the front or end of the block, or on a sticker under the bonnet or in the boot near the spare wheel. This is the definitive answer.

    Reliability: definitive. Some engines make you look hard for it.
  4. The VIN

    Visible at the base of the windscreen and on the V5C. A dealer parts desk can decode which engine was fitted at the factory from the VIN alone, usually for free over the phone.

    Reliability: definitive, if the engine has never been swapped.
  5. Old service invoices

    Any previous timing job will name the parts. An invoice listing a belt kit tells you the answer and gives you the date — two things at once.

    Reliability: high, and it doubles as proof of when the work was done.
  6. Asking a garage the narrow question

    Not “does my car need a cambelt?” but “which engine code is fitted, and does that one have a belt?” It is a thirty-second job for someone with the car in front of them.

    Reliability: high. Should be free — if a diagnostic fee is quoted to answer it, ask why.

What to do once you know

If it’s a cambelt: find the interval in the schedule and the date of the last change. Both matter, because belts expire on age as well as mileage — a low-mileage car can be years past due with a perfectly healthy-looking belt. If it’s a chain: there is nothing to schedule and, in most cases, nothing to spend. The one thing that protects a chain is unglamorous: oil changes on time, with the correct specification. Chains stretch when oil is old or wrong, and a stretched chain on some engines is an engine-out repair costing several times a cambelt. A rattle on cold start that fades after a few seconds is the symptom worth investigating rather than ignoring.

If it’s a wet belt: treat the interval as shorter than the original handbook suggests and check the current manufacturer advice, because several of these have been revised downwards. Oil specification is not optional. Our wet belt guide covers the affected engines.

And if a garage quotes you for a cambelt the checker says you don’t have — that is not necessarily dishonesty. Service menus are often built by model rather than engine, and the error is common. Ask the narrow question, and ask to see the interval in the schedule. A garage that can point to it is right; one that can’t will usually withdraw the quote on the spot.

Why the MOT won’t tell you

Nothing in the MOT test touches the timing system. The tester never removes a cover, never reads the service schedule and has no way of knowing whether your belt is one year old or eleven. A car can pass an MOT with a clean sheet in the morning and lose its engine to a snapped belt that afternoon, and nothing about the test was wrong.

This surprises people, and it is worth stating plainly because it changes how you read a full MOT history. A long run of passes says the brakes, tyres, lights and structure have been fine. It says precisely nothing about the cambelt, the clutch, the flywheel or the chain. Those live in the service record, and the service record is a separate document that many used cars simply do not have. When you are buying, “12 months MOT” and “belt done” are different claims, and only one of them comes with paperwork.

How can I tell if my car has a cambelt or a timing chain?

Check the service schedule in your handbook first: if the engine has a cambelt, there will be a line giving a mileage and an age limit for it. No line means no scheduled belt, which almost always means a chain. Confirm with your engine code rather than the badge, because one badge can cover two engines with different systems.

Why can the same model have a belt in one engine and a chain in another?

Because manufacturers switch between the two for cost, noise and emissions reasons, and rarely at a clean generation boundary. The Vauxhall Astra has used all three systems — belt, chain and wet belt — across recent generations. Model and year together are often not enough to answer the question; the engine is.

Which UK engines use a wet belt?

The two you will meet most often are Ford’s 1.0 EcoBoost and the PSA 1.2 PureTech, found in the Fiesta, Focus, Corsa and newer Astra among others. Both run the belt inside the engine in oil. If you have one, the belt exists but behaves and costs differently from a conventional one.

Does the V5C log book say whether I have a belt or a chain?

My handbook doesn’t list a cambelt interval — does that mean I have a chain?

Almost certainly yes. Manufacturers publish belt intervals because a missed one destroys engines and generates warranty disputes; they have no reason to omit it. Confirm with the engine code if the car is a grey import or the handbook is a generic multi-market edition.

Is a timing chain better than a cambelt?

Usually cheaper to own, not automatically better. A chain has no scheduled replacement, which removes a recurring bill. But chains stretch when oil changes are neglected, and a failed chain on engines like the BMW N47 is an engine-out job costing several times a cambelt. A belt on schedule is more predictable; a chain on bad oil is not.

Do hybrids and electric cars have cambelts?

Fully electric cars have no timing system at all — no belt, no chain, nothing to schedule. Hybrids still have a petrol engine and follow that engine’s rules: the Toyota Yaris hybrid, for instance, uses a chain like every other Yaris. Check the engine, not the drivetrain.

Is a timing belt the same thing as a cambelt?

Yes — the same part under two names, along with “camshaft drive belt” on some invoices. Don’t confuse it with the auxiliary or serpentine belt, which is visible on the outside of the engine and drives the alternator and air conditioning. That one is cheap and unrelated to engine timing.

Is the cambelt checked during an MOT?

No. The MOT does not inspect the timing system in any form — no cover comes off and the service schedule is never consulted. A car can pass with a clean sheet and snap its belt the same week. Belt history lives in the service record, which is a separate document.

Can I see the cambelt without taking anything apart?

Rarely. On some transverse engines a section of belt is visible through a gap in the cover, but on most you would need the cover off, and on wet-belt engines the belt is inside the engine and invisible by design. A visual check is a hint at best — the service schedule is the real evidence.

A garage quoted me for a cambelt — how do I check it’s genuinely needed?

Ask two questions: which engine code is fitted, and where the belt interval appears in the schedule for that engine. Both are quick to answer with the car present. Quotes generated from a model-based service menu rather than the engine are a common source of error, and this question resolves it without accusing anyone of anything.
