A track rod end fitted without an alignment afterwards is half a job, and the missing half turns up later as a tyre bill. If alignment is not in the quote, it will be added, or your tyres will pay for it.
When you turn the steering wheel, a rack pushes a rod sideways and that rod pushes the wheel round. The track rod end is the ball joint where that rod meets the steering arm on the hub. It has to pivot in several directions while transmitting every steering input, and when it develops play, some of your steering movement is absorbed by the slack rather than reaching the wheel.
Inner or outer — the same phrase, different jobs
Each front wheel is steered through two joints, and the certificate does not always say which one has the play.
The outer track rod end is the visible one at the wheel, screwed onto the end of the rod and bolted into the steering arm. It is the more common of the two to wear, because it is exposed to everything the road throws at it. Replacing one is straightforward: undo the joint, unscrew it, wind the new one on to the same position, tighten and align.
The inner track rod sits at the other end, where the rod enters the steering rack, hidden under a concertina rubber gaiter. It wears less often but costs more to replace, because the gaiter has to come off and the joint is torqued into the rack itself. On some cars the rack has to be partly freed to get the tool in.
Both produce similar symptoms: a knock felt through the steering wheel over bumps, sometimes a slight vagueness on centre, and uneven tyre wear. The difference is entirely in what it costs to put right, which is why the first question is which one.
There is a diagnostic detail worth knowing: with the car raised, rocking the wheel side to side by hand reveals play at whichever joint is worn, and a mechanic can point at it. Play at the outer joint shows as movement between rod and steering arm; play at the inner shows further in, at the rack.
Why this one eats your tyres
This is the part of the story that makes a cheap advisory worth acting on quickly, and it is rarely explained.
The track rod sets the toe angle — whether your front wheels point very slightly inward or outward relative to each other. That angle is adjusted by screwing the track rod end in or out, and it is measured in fractions of a degree. Get it wrong and the tyres are dragged sideways a little with every mile.
Play in the joint means the toe angle is no longer fixed. The wheel can move within the slack, so the geometry changes under load, under braking and mid-corner. The tyre records that as feathered or one-sided wear, and a set of front tyres can be ruined in a few thousand miles by a joint that costs eighty pounds to replace.
Which is why the alignment afterwards is not optional. Fitting a new joint restores the ability to hold an angle; it does not set the angle correctly. If your car also has a tyre advisory mentioning edge wear, the two are very likely the same story, and replacing the tyre before the joint means buying the tyre twice.
How long you actually have
Legally, until the play becomes excessive. The car passed, and nothing forces the repair.
Practically, weeks to a few months, and this sits at the shorter end of the advisory range for two reasons. First, steering joints are assessed strictly and the gap between slight and excessive is smaller than for suspension components. Second, the tyre wear starts immediately, so waiting has a running cost that other advisories do not.
The symptom to watch for is knocking through the wheel rather than through the floor. A suspension knock arrives at your feet; a steering knock arrives at your hands, often as a slight click or shudder felt in the rim when going over a bump mid-turn. If that appears or gets worse, the play has grown.
What does not happen is sudden failure. Track rod ends wear rather than snap, and complete separation is rare and usually preceded by obvious warning. This is a job to book promptly, not an emergency.
The point where an advisory becomes a failure
The test distinguishes slight play from excessive play, and for steering joints the threshold for excessive is lower than it would be elsewhere, because any slack here translates directly into steering that does not go where you point it.
No measurement, again. The tester rocks the wheel or uses the ramp’s play detector plates and watches the joint under load. Visible movement at the joint that is small and does not knock is slight; movement that is obvious, or that produces a knock, is excessive. As with suspension arms, it is judgement rather than a number, which explains year-to-year inconsistency between test stations.
A split boot is its own problem. The small rubber boot over the joint keeps grease in and water out. Once split, the joint’s life shortens dramatically, and a badly deteriorated boot can be recorded as a defect in its own right. If yours is split but the joint is not yet worn, that is the cheapest possible moment to act.
The steering system as a whole is also assessed for excessive free play at the wheel itself, which can come from these joints or from the rack. If your certificate mentions play at the steering wheel as well as at a joint, they are probably the same fault described twice.

Inside the £80–£160 range. The alignment is more than half the bill here, and it is the part that protects a pair of tyres worth considerably more than the whole job.
What it costs
£80–£160 per side fitted, including the alignment. The joint itself is usually £15–£35. Most of the rest is the alignment, and on cars where the joint has seized onto the rod or the pinch bolt has corroded, the labour rises.
An inner track rod costs more — more labour to reach, a specialist tool to release it, and the gaiter replaced while it is off. If your certificate names the inner joint, expect the upper end of the range or above.
Both sides is worth asking about here. Not because they need matching, but because the alignment is done for the car rather than per side. If both joints are worn, doing them together means paying for one alignment instead of two, and the alignment is the biggest single line on the bill.
