Gas is escaping somewhere before the tailpipe. The word doing the work here is minor — because a leak the tester judged more than minor would have failed the car rather than advised on it.
A blow at a joint, a pinhole in a silencer or a failing flexible pipe. Small enough today that the tester recorded rather than failed it, but exhaust leaks only ever get larger.
Deal with it before it takes a neighbouring joint with it. Leaks grow, and a small one repaired cheaply becomes a section replaced expensively.

A leaking flexible pipe can often be welded or sleeved for around a third of the cost of a new front section. Ask before the whole section goes on the quote.

Where leaks actually happen
An exhaust is a sealed path from the engine to the tailpipe, joined at several points by clamps, flanges and gaskets. Gas escaping anywhere along that path is a leak. Where it escapes decides almost everything about the cost.
- At the joints, most often. Where two sections meet there is a clamp or a flange with a gasket, and gaskets harden and crush over time while clamps corrode and lose tension. A joint blow is the cheapest leak there is: a new gasket, a new clamp, sometimes just tightening. It is also the most common.
- At the flexible pipe. A short braided section near the front of the system, allowing the exhaust to move with the engine. It fails from repeated flexing rather than corrosion, and it is one of the two leaks that produce a distinct sound.
- In a silencer. Corrosion perforating the box itself, usually from the inside out. This means replacing that section — a silencer cannot be usefully patched, because the metal around any hole is thin too.
- At the manifold. Where the exhaust bolts to the engine. Manifold gaskets and studs suffer more heat cycling than anything else in the system, and a leak here has its own distinctive sound: a ticking or chuffing that is loudest on a cold start and quietens as everything expands and seals.
How to tell them apart by ear: a joint blow is a steady rasp under load. A flexi is a deeper, rattlier blow with a metallic edge, often felt as vibration. A manifold leak ticks in time with the engine and improves as it warms. That last one is worth knowing, because a ticking cold engine gets misdiagnosed as something far more expensive.
The flexible pipe, and why welding wins
The flexi is a short section of braided or bellows-type pipe near the engine end, and it exists because the engine moves on its mounts while the rest of the exhaust is fixed to the body. Without it, every gearchange would crack a joint.
It fails from fatigue, not rust. Thousands of small movements eventually tear the braid, and the failure is usually visible: a torn or gaping section that puffs when the engine is running.
The expensive route is replacing the whole front section, because manufacturers often supply the flexi only as part of a larger assembly. That can mean a front pipe with catalytic converter attached, which is why a small tear sometimes attracts a startling quote.
The cheap route is a welded repair. A replacement flexi is cut in and welded, which is a routine job at any exhaust specialist and typically a fraction of the price of the assembly. It is a proper repair rather than a bodge — the welded flexi is a new component doing the original job.
So the question is not whether to weld but whether whoever is quoting can. Not every garage welds exhausts; specialists and many independents do. If your quote is for a complete front section because of a flexi, it is worth a second opinion from somewhere with a welder.
How long you actually have
Legally, until the leak becomes more than minor. The car passed.
Practically, weeks to months, and less than a corroded-but-sealed system. The physics is against waiting: escaping gas is hot and moving fast, and it erodes the metal around the hole. A pinhole becomes a slot, a slot becomes a split. Meanwhile the extra movement at a failed flexi puts load on the joints either side.
You will hear it change. Exhaust leaks announce their progress clearly, and a noise that has grown noticeably louder over a few weeks is telling you the hole has grown too.
One reason not to wait that people underestimate: a leak before the oxygen sensor lets extra air into the system, which confuses the fuelling and can trigger a warning light and poor running. That turns a simple exhaust job into a diagnostic puzzle, and it is avoidable by fixing the leak.
Minor leak or failure — where is the line?
Worth being straightforward about this, because the answer is less crisp than most people expect. The test fails an exhaust that leaks gas from anywhere other than the tailpipe. Read strictly, any leak is a failure.
In practice testers distinguish severity, and a trace of blow at a joint that seals as the system heats and expands is commonly recorded as an advisory while an audible, obvious leak fails. That is a judgement rather than a line in a manual, which is why the same car can be advised at one station and failed at another.
Which makes this advisory unusual even among judgement calls. On a worn brake disc, the manual sets no thickness but the manufacturer does, so a judgement sits alongside a number. Here there is no number at all on the leak itself. The phrase “minor leak” is a record of tolerance rather than a category the rules actually create.
Fumes reaching the cabin are treated separately and much more seriously. The manual has its own entry for that, and where the tester judges the escape a danger to health it is the most severe classification the test carries. If you can smell exhaust inside the car, this stops being about cost.
Noise is assessed separately too, and a system judged unreasonably loud compared with a similar vehicle fails regardless of where the gas is escaping. A leak large enough to change the exhaust note is usually caught by that test even when the leak itself is arguable.
How often does this advisory become a failure?

From the DVSA MOT testing bulk dataset (Open Government Licence v3.0): 829.7 million tests and 145.1 million advisories tracked to each vehicle’s later tests, from 6,492,834 body and structure advisories. Defect code 6.1 covers the body and structure group, of which the exhaust system is one part.
This is the second highest conversion rate of any group in the record, behind suspension and comfortably ahead of brakes and tyres. Around one in eight comes back as a failure, and the median gap is 379 days — one MOT cycle almost to the day.
Every other advisory on this site describes a threshold that has not been crossed: tread above 1.6 mm, pad above 1.5 mm, play within limits. Read strictly, an exhaust leak has no such threshold — gas escaping before the tailpipe is a failure, full stop. “Minor” is the tester’s tolerance, not a category the manual sets out.
Which explains the conversion rate better than corrosion does. Some of that 11.8% is a leak that grew, and some is the same leak meeting a tester who drew the line elsewhere. You are not waiting for the exhaust to fail a rule; you are waiting to see how the next person reads one.
That is the practical case for fixing it while it is still cheap. A leak you have repaired cannot be interpreted at all.
How the risk changes with the age of the car
Because the record spans two decades, the same figure can be broken down by how old the car was when the advisory was written. This group does something no other one does.

The line never comes back down. That sounds unremarkable until you compare it with a wheel bearing, where the risk peaks around fifteen years and then falls away — because cars that reach twenty and twenty-five years on British roads are survivors, either looked after or barely driven. That survivor effect flattens most curves.
It does not flatten this one, and corrosion is why. A careful owner can postpone a bill, but nobody can un-rust a car. Every winter adds to a total that never reduces, so even a cherished twenty-five-year-old carries more accumulated corrosion than a neglected ten-year-old. It is the one group in the record where being an old car is a bigger factor than being a lucky one.

The spread here is genuinely about the repair rather than the car, which is unusual — on most jobs the model drives the price. Here a small hatchback with a torn flexi and a large estate with a torn flexi are much the same money, while two identical cars with leaks in different places are not.
Ask for the diagnosis before the quote. Locating an exhaust leak takes minutes with the engine running and the car on a ramp, and it converts a range into a number. A quote that arrives without a named location has skipped that step.
Exhaust paste and bandages are a genuine short-term option and worth being honest about. They can seal a small hole for a few months, and on a car with a booked repair or an imminent sale they have a place. They are not a repair, they usually will not survive a winter, and a tester who sees a bandaged leak may well look harder at what is underneath it.
What should be on the quote: the specific section or joint, and whether welding was considered. What should not be on it is the catalytic converter unless it was separately assessed — that is a different component with a different price.

With the engine running and the car raised, a leak is usually audible and often visible as a puff of soot around the hole. Partly obstructing the tailpipe raises the pressure and makes a small leak obvious. From the driving seat, the sound gives you a strong hint: a ticking that fades as the engine warms points at the manifold end, while a steady rasp under load points further back.
Can an exhaust leak be welded rather than replaced?
Often yes, and it is a proper repair rather than a temporary one.
