Nissan Qashqai service cost
Full service at an independent garage, parts and labour included — the annual benchmark across the Qashqai range.
- Interim £105 – £150
- Major £260 – £360
- Add an MOT for £35 – £45
A Nissan Qashqai full service costs £170–£230 at an independent garage, an interim £105–£150 and a major £260–£360. If yours is an automatic, there is a second fluid that matters more than any of those numbers and appears on no service menu: the Xtronic CVT’s own oil. On this car, the gearbox fluid is not a maintenance detail — it is most of the difference between a long life and a write-off.
Qashqai service cost by engine — and what each one takes
Nissan specifies by performance category rather than by a proprietary code, which makes the Qashqai simpler at the parts counter than its German rivals — but the diesels still need a low-ash oil to protect the particulate filter, and that is not something a generic 5W-30 guarantees.
| Engine or unit | Oil specification | Full service, fitted | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 / 1.3 DIG-T petrol | ACEA C3 · 5W-30 | £170–£200 | The cheapest Qashqai to service |
| 1.6 DIG-T petrol | ACEA C3 · 5W-30 | £175–£210 | More oil, four plugs at major |
| 1.5 dCi diesel | ACEA C3 low-SAPS · 5W-30 | £185–£225 | Fuel filter at major; DPF wants fresh oil |
| 1.6 / 1.7 dCi diesel | ACEA C3 low-SAPS · 5W-30 | £190–£230 | Larger oil capacity, longer on the ramp |
| Xtronic CVT fluid | Gearbox fluid, not engine oil | Not part of any service | Inspection or change — see below |
Independent prices to Nissan’s schedule, parts and labour included; engine service ranges sit inside the national Qashqai row on our car service cost guide. Which engines drive a belt rather than a chain, and what that adds, is settled on our Qashqai cambelt page. A main dealer charges roughly 50% more for the identical checklist.
The Xtronic CVT: the fluid that decides what the car is worth
Most automatic Qashqais use a continuously variable transmission, and a CVT is not a conventional automatic with different software — it transmits drive through a steel belt clamped between moving pulleys, and the fluid between those surfaces is doing structural work rather than merely lubricating. When that fluid degrades, the wear is on the pulleys and the belt themselves. That is why CVT trouble tends to arrive not as a repairable fault but as a replacement transmission, and why our gearbox repair guide prices this category so far above a clutch job.
The schedule’s wording is where owners get caught. Nissan’s maintenance plan frames the CVT fluid conditionally: inspect it at the specified points and, where that inspection is not carried out, change it at around 54,000 miles. A conditional instruction is easy to read as no instruction at all, and a full service — which covers the engine and the inspection checklist — does not include it either way. So the fluid quietly reaches an age nobody has looked at, in a component whose failure costs more than the car is often worth.
Hence this page’s question, worth asking at the next service and worth asking of any used Qashqai you are considering: was the CVT fluid inspected — and if not, when was it last changed? On a car with a full main-dealer history the answer may genuinely be yes. On a car serviced cheaply for years, the honest answer is usually that nobody has ever looked, and that is information you can act on before you buy rather than after.
The counterweight, because it belongs here: on an older, high-mileage Qashqai already showing CVT symptoms — shuddering, whining, hesitation on pull-away — a fluid change is not a rescue, and paying for one in the hope of avoiding a transmission is usually money into a decision you have already lost. Fresh fluid is preventive maintenance, not a repair. If yours is at that stage, the half-the-value arithmetic on our gearbox guide is the more useful page.
Two schedules, and most Qashqais are on the wrong one
Nissan publishes a normal maintenance schedule and a second, shorter one for severe operating conditions — defined, roughly, as repeated short journeys, extensive stop-start traffic, towing, and dusty or rough roads. The severe interval is less than half the normal one. Read that definition again with an average British Qashqai in mind: school runs, supermarket trips, town traffic, a caravan twice a summer. The severe schedule is not an exotic case for this car; for a great many of them it is simply an accurate description.
Which is the honest argument for annual oil changes on a Qashqai regardless of what the countdown shows, and it is a stronger one on the diesels than the petrols. A 1.5 or 1.6 dCi doing short cold journeys never completes the regenerations its particulate filter needs, and the unburnt fuel that ends up in the sump thins the oil while the ash accumulates where no driving will remove it. The cost of that arriving is on our DPF cleaning guide; the cost of preventing it is one service a year.
The time-aged items apply as they do everywhere: brake fluid on a two-year cycle whatever the mileage, coolant on its own long schedule, cabin filter annually. On a heavy crossover the brakes also do more work than the badge suggests, and where a service turns up worn pads or discs, price that separately rather than accepting it inside the service quote.
One thing the annual test cannot tell you on this car in particular: the MOT examines condition on the day and is entirely silent on transmission fluid, service history and oil age. A Qashqai can pass without a single advisory while its CVT fluid has never been touched. Our MOT cost guide covers what the test does check.
| Engine oil, 4.5 litres of low-SAPS ACEA C3 | £44 |
| Oil filter and sump plug washer | £12 |
| Air filter | £19 |
| Labour, 2 hours at £58/hour | £116 |
| Total, 70-point check included | £191 |
The same visit at a Nissan dealer prices around £280–£350. A CVT fluid change, where due, is a separate job and never included in the figure above. At major level, with fuel filter, plugs and brake fluid, budget nearer £320.
FAQ
How much does a Nissan Qashqai service cost?
£170–£230 for a full service at an independent garage, £105–£150 for an interim and £260–£360 for a major. A main dealer charges roughly 50% more for the same checklist. The dCi diesels sit at the top of the range on oil capacity, specification and time on the ramp.
Is CVT fluid included in a Qashqai service?
No. The Xtronic transmission fluid sits outside every full and major service, and Nissan’s schedule frames it conditionally — inspect at the specified points, or change at around 54,000 miles where that inspection is not performed. Conditional wording is easy to read as no requirement at all.
How often should Qashqai CVT fluid be changed?
Around every 54,000 miles where the specified inspections are not being carried out, and sooner for cars in heavy stop-start traffic or towing. The fluid does structural work between the belt and pulleys, so degraded fluid wears the components themselves rather than just running hot.
What oil does a Nissan Qashqai take?
5W-30 to ACEA C3 for most of the range. On the dCi diesels the low-SAPS property matters specifically: it limits the ash that accumulates in the particulate filter, which no amount of motorway driving will burn out once it is there. Confirm on the filler cap.
What counts as severe service conditions on a Qashqai?
Repeated short journeys, extensive stop-start traffic, towing, and dusty or rough roads — with an interval less than half the normal one. Read against how most British Qashqais are actually driven, the severe schedule is often the accurate one rather than the exception.
Is a diesel Qashqai more expensive to service?
Yes, modestly — £185–£230 for a full service against £170–£210 for a petrol, on oil capacity, specification and the fuel filter at major level. The larger cost is indirect: a dCi used only for short trips cannot complete particulate filter regenerations, and that repair dwarfs any servicing difference.
Will servicing my Qashqai outside a Nissan dealer void the warranty?
No. Block exemption rules protect you provided the garage follows Nissan’s schedule, uses original-equipment quality parts and the correct oil specification, and records the work. Ask for the specification on the invoice and for the digital service record to be updated before you pay.
What is included in a Qashqai major service?
Everything in a full service plus the time-aged items: spark plugs on petrols, fuel filter on diesels, brake fluid, and coolant if due. It lands roughly every second visit. Transmission fluid stays outside it, so raise the CVT explicitly rather than assuming the major covers everything.
