Nissan Qashqai water pump replacement cost
Standalone replacement at an independent garage, pump, coolant and labour included — higher than a hatchback for reasons that have nothing to do with the part.
- Done with the belt +£50 – £100
- Standalone job 2 – 3 h
- You are paying for access, not parts
A Nissan Qashqai water pump costs £220–£380 fitted at an independent garage as a standalone job, or £50–£100 added to a cambelt change. That is more than the same repair on a hatchback, and the pump is not the reason — several of these engines are shared with much cheaper cars. What you are paying for is the two to three hours it takes to reach the pump in a crossover engine bay.
Qashqai water pump cost by engine
The engine decides whether a cheaper moment ever arrives. The body decides how long the job takes. Both are on your invoice, and only one of them is negotiable.
| Engine | Cam drive | Standalone, fitted | Belt window |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 dCi diesel | Conventional belt | £220–£340 | Yes — every belt change |
| 1.6 dCi diesel | Conventional belt | £240–£380 | Yes — every belt change |
| 1.2 DIG-T petrol | Chain | £230–£350 | No — nothing to piggyback on |
| 1.3 DIG-T petrol | Chain | £240–£360 | No — nothing to piggyback on |
| 1.6 / 2.0 petrol | Chain | £240–£380 | No — nothing to piggyback on |
Independent garage prices, pump, correct-spec coolant and labour included; all ranges sit inside the national Qashqai range on our water pump cost guide. Cam drive varies by engine and build — confirm yours by reg rather than by badge. A main dealer typically charges around 50% more.
You are paying for hours, not for a pump
The part in a Qashqai is not a Qashqai part. Several of these engines come from the Renault-Nissan shelf and appear in cars costing a fraction of a crossover — the diesel in particular is one of the most widely fitted small diesels in Europe. The pump that goes into your Qashqai is, in a great many cases, the same pump that goes into far cheaper cars, at the same price, from the same shelf.
So when a Qashqai quote comes in above what a friend with a hatchback paid, the instinct to blame the badge is understandable and wrong. Look at the labour line instead. Reaching a water pump in a crossover means working through a taller, more crowded engine bay with more ancillaries and undertrays in the way — and our national figures put the Qashqai at two to three hours against the hour and a half to two and a half that a supermini takes. That extra time, not the part, is essentially the whole difference.
Which changes how you should compare quotes. Two garages quoting a Qashqai pump will differ mostly on how long they think it takes and what they charge an hour — so the useful question is how many hours are you quoting, and what has to come off? A garage that answers with a number and a list has priced the job. A garage that only quotes a total is asking you to trust an estimate you cannot check.
It also tells you where the savings actually live, and it is not in the part. Trimming twenty pounds off a component that costs well under a third of the bill barely moves the total — and can cost you the whole labour charge again if it fails early. Our Juke page works through that arithmetic in full, since the two share engines and the same temptation.
The belt window is worth more on a Qashqai than on a small car
Everything above has a useful flip side. If the labour is what makes this expensive, then the moment when the labour is already being paid for is worth proportionally more here than on any hatchback in our range.
On the diesels, that moment is the cambelt change. The belt drives the pump, the strip-down is the same, and adding the pump costs its part price rather than a second two-to-three-hour visit. On a car where those hours are the expensive part, £50–£100 against £220–£380 is the largest proportional saving available anywhere on this site — and it is available only if the pump is on the quote when the belt is booked. Ask for it by name; the reasoning is set out on our Qashqai cambelt page.
On the petrol engines there is no such moment, because chains are not replaced on a schedule and nothing routine ever opens that area up. That has one consolation and one cost. The consolation is safety: a chain-driven engine’s pump cannot destroy the timing if it seizes, so the risk is overheating rather than bent valves. The cost is that waiting achieves nothing — there is no cheaper day coming, so a confirmed leak should simply be booked.
If your Qashqai is a diesel and the belt has already been done without the pump, that is worth knowing now rather than later. The belt is fine; the pump is now the older half of a pair that shares a strip-down, and if it starts weeping you are buying those hours a second time. Reading the belt invoice rather than the stamp is a two-minute job that can be worth a couple of hundred pounds.
What a proper Qashqai pump quote includes
Coolant, named by specification and by quantity. A crossover cooling system holds noticeably more than a supermini’s, so the refill is a real line rather than a rounding error. Types do not mix, and a quote that names the specification is telling you something reassuring about the workshop.
The tensioner and idlers on the diesels. If the belt is off, the parts that guide and tension it are exposed and normally supplied as one kit with the pump. Fitting a new pump against tired tensioners is a false economy in the least forgiving place on the engine.
Undertrays refitted properly. A small thing that matters on this shape of car: the trays that had to come off protect the belt area from road water and grit, and one left loose or with missing clips undoes part of what you have just paid for. Worth a glance before you drive away.
And before authorising anything, the diagnosis in the right order. Coolant loss on a Qashqai is far more often a hose, a cap, an expansion tank or a thermostat housing than the pump — the leak ladder on our main guide works up from the cheap end for exactly that reason. A pressure test that names a location beats a quote that names a part, and if the level falls with nothing visible underneath, a head gasket block test comes first.
| Pressure test locating the leak | £40 |
| Water pump | £76 |
| Labour, 2.5 hours | £148 |
| Correct-spec coolant and system bleed | £28 |
| Total, standalone | £292 |
Look at the proportions rather than the total: the labour is roughly twice the part. That is the Qashqai pattern, and it is why the pump belongs in the cambelt booking whenever the timing allows — the same pump would have added £50–£100 there. The same visit at a Nissan dealer prices around £440. Prices are estimates; final quotes come from garages.
FAQ
How much does a water pump cost on a Nissan Qashqai?
£220–£380 fitted at an independent garage as a standalone job, or £50–£100 added to a cambelt change on the diesel engines. Main dealers charge roughly 50% more. Most of that figure is labour rather than the part, because the job takes two to three hours.
Why is a Qashqai water pump dearer than on a hatchback?
Because of access, not the part. Several Qashqai engines are shared with much cheaper cars and take the same pump at the same price. Reaching it through a taller, more crowded crossover engine bay takes two to three hours against roughly two for a supermini, and that time is the difference.
Does the cambelt drive the water pump on a Qashqai?
On the diesel engines yes, which is why the pump belongs in the belt kit on those cars. The petrol engines are chain-driven, so no belt job exists to attach the pump to and it is always priced and booked on its own whenever it needs doing.
How do I compare two Qashqai water pump quotes?
By hours and inclusions rather than by the total. Ask how many hours each garage is quoting and what has to come off, then check that coolant and, on the diesels, the tensioner kit are itemised. Two quotes a hundred pounds apart usually differ on what is included, not on greed.
What are the signs of a failing Qashqai water pump?
A coloured drip or dried crust under the front of the engine, a whine or grind from the belt end that rises with engine revs rather than road speed, or temperature climbing in traffic and settling at speed. On this shape of car the drip often lands on an undertray rather than the driveway.
Can I drive my Qashqai with a leaking water pump?
Short, watched journeys with the coolant level checked before each one, at most. On the diesels a pump that seizes rather than weeps can damage the timing belt and the valves with it. If the gauge climbs or steam appears, stop and call recovery rather than pressing on.
Is the Qashqai water pump job worth bundling with the cambelt?
More than on almost any other car in our range. Because the labour is the expensive part here, the moment when it is already being paid for is worth proportionally more — £50–£100 added to a belt booking against £220–£380 as a separate visit.
Does the MOT check the Qashqai’s cooling system?
No — cooling is not part of the MOT test, so a weeping pump never appears as an advisory and a clean pass says nothing about it. With undertrays hiding early drips on this model, the annual service checklist matters more here than the certificate does.
