The fluid has absorbed moisture or picked up dirt and is past its useful life. The brakes still work normally today — which is exactly why this is an advisory — but the fluid no longer has the reserve it is supposed to have.

This is the cheapest item in the whole advisory section and one of the few that is genuinely straightforward. Book it with the next service and it often costs less again.

Why brake fluid absorbs water in the first place

Brake fluid works because liquids do not compress. Push the pedal, the fluid transmits that force to all four corners without giving way, and the car stops. Everything about a braking system depends on the fluid staying a liquid — and that is precisely what water takes away.

  1. The fluid is hygroscopic by design. Standard brake fluid actively attracts water molecules, and it enters through microscopic paths in flexible hoses, past seals, and through the reservoir cap breather. That sounds like a flaw and is actually deliberate: water that is absorbed and dispersed through the fluid is far safer than water pooling in one corner of a caliper where it can freeze or corrode.
  2. Water lowers the boiling point. Fresh fluid boils well above the temperature brakes reach in normal use. Fluid carrying a few percent water boils substantially lower — and once it boils, you have vapour in the lines. Vapour compresses. The pedal goes to the floor and the brakes stop working until things cool.
  3. Water corrodes from the inside. Long before the boiling point matters, moisture attacks the metal surfaces it sits against: caliper bores, cylinder walls and the internals of the ABS unit. That is the quiet cost of leaving old fluid in a car, and it is the reason a fluid change is cheap insurance against components that are not.

Dirt is the second kind of contamination and a different problem. Dark, murky fluid usually means rubber and corrosion particles circulating in the system. Fluid contaminated with the wrong oil — mineral oil in a system designed for glycol — is a far more serious matter, because it swells every rubber seal in the car and the repair is an overhaul rather than a bleed.

The one item that ages while the car is parked

Every other advisory on this site describes wear. Pads thin because you brake. Bushes perish because the suspension moves. Springs corrode because of salt and cycles. All of it happens because the car is used.

Brake fluid is the exception. Absorption happens on a calendar, not on an odometer — a car doing two thousand miles a year and a car doing twenty thousand pick up moisture at broadly similar rates, because the mechanism is exposure to air rather than friction. A cherished low-mileage car with immaculate pads can have fluid in worse condition than a taxi’s.

Which is why the manufacturer’s answer is an interval rather than a threshold. Most specify a fluid change every two years regardless of mileage, and that figure is in your service schedule rather than in any MOT document. If you cannot remember the last change, that itself is close to an answer.

The practical consequence is unusual and worth stating plainly: this advisory is more likely on a car that sits than on a car that works. It is one of very few places where doing fewer miles does not help you.

When it stops being an advisory

Fluid below the minimum mark is a failure. That one is straightforward, visible in seconds, and often means something else is wrong — fluid does not evaporate, so a genuinely low reservoir points either at a leak or at pads so worn that the fluid has moved into the calipers to take up the slack.

Contamination itself is a judgement about appearance. The tester can see whether the fluid is clear and amber or dark and murky, and can see obvious contamination. What the test does not do is measure how much water is in it — that requires a separate moisture tester, and it sits outside the MOT.

So the thing that actually matters is not measured on the day. Fluid can look perfectly clean and still carry enough water to boil early under sustained braking, and it can look darker than ideal while remaining well inside specification. Appearance and moisture content are related, but loosely.

Which turns the advisory into a prompt rather than a verdict. Someone has looked at your fluid and thought it worth writing down. The useful next step is not to argue about the colour but to have the moisture percentage read, because that is the number the whole thing rests on.

What the national data does not show

On every other advisory in this section we can say what happened next, because the DVSA test record follows each one forward across 145 million observations. Suspension advisories return as failures 18.7% of the time. Brake components, 9.4%. Tyres, 9.9%.

For brake fluid we are not going to give you a figure, because we do not have one worth giving. Fluid contamination is not a wearing part being tracked from one test to the next in the way a pad or a bush is, and borrowing the 9.4% from the brake category would mean applying a number about worn components to a fluid that does not wear at all. It would look authoritative and mean nothing.

What can be said instead is more useful anyway. The risk from old brake fluid does not land on an MOT certificate — it lands on a long descent, or on a motorway with a heavy load, at the moment the fluid boils and the pedal goes soft. No annual test catches that, because the fluid is only dangerous under conditions a test bay never creates.

So the question this advisory raises is not “will it fail next year”. It is “when was this last changed” — and unlike everything else on the certificate, that one has an answer you can look up in your own service history.

Independent garage prices, parts and labour. Main dealers typically charge around 50% more. There is no per-model variation worth speaking of here — unlike pads and discs, a fluid change costs much the same across ordinary cars.

This is the cheapest line in the entire advisory section, and one of the few where the price barely moves between a small hatchback and a large estate. The job is a litre of fluid and the time it takes to bleed four corners properly.

Cars with ABS take a little longer and it is worth paying for. Getting old fluid out of an ABS modulator often needs the pump cycled with diagnostic equipment rather than a plain pedal bleed. A garage that skips that step leaves the oldest, wettest fluid in the one component you least want it in.

Match the specification, do not upgrade it casually. DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based and mix; DOT 5 is silicone and must never go into a system designed for the others. The correct specification is on the reservoir cap, and it is one of the few places on a car where following the label exactly matters more than any opinion about quality.
