What affects the price

The refrigerant type is the whole game. R134a costs a garage roughly £8 per kilo; the newer R1234yf costs around £100 per kilo, and the machine that handles it costs more too. Two identical-looking hatchbacks parked side by side can be £50 and £140 jobs purely because one was registered a couple of years after the other. Nothing else on this page moves the price as far as this single fact.

How much gas your system holds comes second. A small hatchback takes around 400–500 grams; a family SUV with dual-zone climate and rear vents can take 700 grams or more. Since the gas is charged by weight, bigger and better-equipped cars sit at the top of each column in the table above — it’s the same reason a Qashqai costs more to re-gas than a Fiesta on the same refrigerant.

What’s actually included varies more than the headline price. A proper re-gas is recover, vacuum, leak-hold test, fresh oil and UV dye, then a weighed recharge. R134a or R1234yf: which gas does your car use?

The switch happened for environmental reasons: R134a has a global warming potential over 1,400 times that of CO₂, and R1234yf brings that down to almost nothing. New car type approvals had to use the new gas from 2013, and every new car sold from January 2017 has it. That leaves three groups of cars on UK roads — and three very different bills.

The 2014–2016 crossover cars are where phone quotes go wrong. If you ring three garages saying “it’s a 2015 Golf” you may be quoted for the wrong gas entirely, then hit a surprise on the ramp. Open the bonnet first: the refrigerant sticker is usually on the slam panel or a strut top. Thirty seconds of checking turns a vague quote into a firm one — and the table above tells you when your specific model made the jump. A question that comes up every summer: can an older car be converted to the cheaper-to-buy gas, or a newer one filled with the cheap stuff? No — and be wary of anyone offering it. What a proper re-gas actually includes

A re-gas done properly is a small diagnostic procedure, not just a refill. The machine first recovers whatever gas is left and weighs it — that number alone tells a good technician a lot, because a system that should hold 500 grams and gives back 100 has been leaking, not gently fading. The system is then pulled into a deep vacuum and held there for a quarter of an hour or more. If the vacuum holds, the system is tight; if it climbs, there’s a leak and there is no point putting expensive new gas into it.

Only then does fresh refrigerant go in, weighed to the gram against the figure on the under-bonnet sticker, along with a measure of compressor oil and usually a UV dye that makes any future leak glow under a lamp. How your air con makes cold air — and where it breaks

The system is a loop of four parts, and knowing which does what turns a garage’s diagnosis from jargon into a bill you can sanity-check. The compressor, driven by the engine’s auxiliary belt (or its own electric motor in EVs), squeezes the refrigerant into a hot, high-pressure gas — it’s the hardest-working and most expensive part of the loop, which is why “you need a new compressor” deserves a second opinion at £400–£800-plus. The condenser, a thin radiator-like panel right behind the front grille, sheds that heat to the outside air — and because it lives in the line of fire of every stone, fly and handful of road salt, it’s the part most likely to spring the leak that empties your system, at £250–£450 to replace.

From there the liquid refrigerant passes an expansion valve — a cheap part that occasionally clogs and mimics far worse faults — and boils inside the evaporator, buried deep in the dashboard, snatching heat out of the cabin air blowing across it. Warm air at the vents has half a dozen causes, and only one of them is fixed by a re-gas. Work down this list from the cheapest — the order matters, because two of the most common culprits cost less than the gas does.

  1. Blocked cabin filter. The forgotten one. A pollen filter choked with leaves and dust strangles airflow so badly that even a healthy, fully-gassed system feels feeble. It’s the cheapest item on this page and the first thing to rule out. £10 – £25

When a re-gas is the wrong answer

Here’s the honest bit that costs us a conversion or two: if your air con still blows properly cold, you don’t need a re-gas. “Re-gas every year” is a sales line, not a service schedule — every two to three years is plenty for a healthy system, and the right trigger is performance, not the calendar.

The reverse mistake is dearer. If your system was re-gassed within the last year or so and it’s blowing warm again, do not buy more gas. That system has a leak, and on the newer refrigerant each refill is £100-plus of gas escaping through the same hole. A £50–£90 dye or nitrogen test finds the escape route; fix that, then fill once. Any garage happy to sell you a third re-gas without mentioning a leak test isn’t on your side.

Watch the small print on headline deals, too. Time it out of season. Aircon pricing has a demand curve: the first hot week of the year fills every diary and firms up every price. Book in spring or autumn and you’re negotiating with a quiet workshop instead of a queue. Your air con doesn’t care what month it’s recharged in.

Use the free check first. Many garages and specialists will put temperature probes in the vents and gauges on the ports for nothing, because it’s how they win the follow-up work. If the vents read cold and pressures are healthy, you’ve just been talked out of a job you didn’t need — pocket that.

Bundle it and rule out the filter. A re-gas booked alongside an annual service or other work often comes discounted — the car is already on the ramp.
