What it costs
A service priced by labour hours and a test priced by statute. On an older car the more useful question is not the price of the visit but whether the visit is worth making.

Why the data flatters old cars
We tracked 145 million MOT advisories through the national record and split them by how old the car was. The shape that came out is easy to misread, and worth reading properly.
Risk climbs with age, peaks, and then falls back. Wheel bearing advisories convert most often at around fifteen years and are lower again by twenty-five. Lamp advisories peak near seventeen and fall after. Suspension peaks at fifteen — the highest point of any curve in the record — and is lower at twenty.
The obvious conclusion is that very old cars are somehow better. They are not. What has happened is that the population changed. A car that was being neglected at twelve years old is often gone by twenty — scrapped, exported, or standing on a drive untested. It stops contributing to the data entirely.
So the twenty-five-year-old cars still being presented for testing are a selected group. They belong to people who chose to keep them, which usually means either genuine care or very little use. The figures describe those owners as much as they describe the cars.
This is survivorship, and it runs through the whole dataset. It does not make the numbers wrong — the conversion rate at twenty-five years really is what it says. It makes one particular sentence wrong: that an old car is a safe bet because the statistics say so. The statistics say the survivors are fine.
The one thing that does not survive selection
If the improvement after fifteen years were about the cars rather than the population, every category would show it. One family does not.

Corrosion never turns the corner, and that is the tell. A careful owner can postpone a clutch, nurse a bearing and replace a damper on their own schedule — so careful owners drag the wear figures down as the fleet ages. Nobody can un-rust a car. Selection cannot rescue a category where the damage is cumulative and irreversible, which is exactly why those two lines keep climbing while the others come back down.
Read the individual history rather than the age. Two twenty-year-old cars of the same model can be in entirely different condition, and the average conversion rate for that age tells you about neither of them — it tells you about the mixture.
What does transfer from the data is which faults to weight heavily. Wear items are recoverable and the numbers show owners recovering them. Structural corrosion is not, and its curve says so. On a car past fifteen, a rust advisory is a different kind of information from a bearing advisory, even where the immediate cost looks similar.
When a car stops being worth the visit
Cars do not disappear from the data because they break. They disappear because a repair crossed a line, and that line is arithmetic rather than mechanical.
The half-value rule
When one repair approaches half what the car is worth, the decision stops being about the fault and starts being about the car. It is the moment most owners choose without ever calling it a choice.

The advisory list matters more as a car ages, not less. On a newer car it is a forecast; on an older one it is a running assessment of whether the car still makes sense. Reading it that way turns a series of small decisions into one clear one.
Watch what repeats rather than what appears. A single advisory is information. The same advisory across three tests is a process that has had three more years to work, and on an older car that distinction is the whole picture. And separate the recoverable from the terminal. Bearings, dampers, bushes and exhausts are all replaceable at known prices. Corrosion in a prescribed area is a different question, because the cost is unknown until somebody looks and the answer is occasionally that there is no answer worth paying for.

Corrosion. Body and exhaust advisories rise from 7.5% conversion at six years to 14.6% by twenty-six, and structural corrosion rises around fivefold between two and twenty-two years. Neither shows the peak-and-fall shape that wearing parts show, because rust is cumulative and cannot be reversed by a careful owner.
At what age is a car most likely to fail on suspension?
Around fifteen years, where 22.3% of suspension advisories convert to a failure — the highest point of any curve in the record. The rate is lower again by twenty, which reflects which cars are still being presented rather than any improvement in the components.
Is an old car with a clean MOT history a safe buy?
It is a better bet than one without, but read the individual record rather than the age. The MOT never inspects the clutch, gearbox, cambelt or engine internals, so a spotless history is silent on the repairs most likely to end an old car’s life.
When does a repair stop being worth doing?
The common rule of thumb is when a single repair approaches half the car’s value. A £900 clutch on a £1,400 car is the moment the decision changes from which repair to whether — and it is the point at which cars start disappearing from the test record altogether.
Should I get a major service on a very old car?
Often not. A major service adds longer-interval items and can cost a meaningful share of a low-value car’s worth. An interim service with the test is frequently the proportionate choice, provided the oil specification is right and anything safety-related gets attended to.
Why do you not publish a price for corrosion repair?
Because no honest price exists before the area is scraped back. A small patch on a sill is a job; corrosion spread through a chassis leg is a decision about the car. Quoting a range would imply a certainty that nobody has at that stage.
Does a repeated advisory matter more on an older car?
Considerably. On any car a repeating advisory means the fault was never resolved, but on an older one it also means the owner has already made a judgement about whether it is worth fixing. Reading three consecutive years of the same note tells you what previous owners decided.
