More hours on dipped beam than anywhere else on this list

Glasgow sits at roughly 55.9 degrees north, further north than any other major city in Britain. That is a fact about daylight, and daylight is a fact about how hard your headlights work.

In midwinter, a normal commute happens in the dark at both ends. Out before it is properly light, home well after it has gone. Cost explains nothing about which advisories get fixed

The obvious assumption is that people put off expensive repairs and deal with cheap ones. We tracked 145 million MOT advisories through the national test record, and the data says the opposite.

Read the table top to bottom and the pattern is backwards. The two cheapest items on the list convert at the highest rate, and the single most expensive one converts at the lowest. Whatever decides which advisories get dealt with, it is not the size of the bill.

What lights have that nothing else on the certificate has

A worn bearing hums. A dying clutch smells. A soft brake pedal announces itself the moment you need it. Almost every fault on a car gives the person paying for it a reason to act.

Headlamp aim gives none. Nothing rattles, no lamp comes on, and the version of the fault that most often gets written up — a beam sitting a little high — actively makes your own drive feel better. It is the one item on the list where the feedback loop points the wrong way, and the one where the consequence lands on a stranger. That, rather than money, is why a £20 job is left undone a quarter of the time.

What the tester actually measures

Beam setting is one of the few things on an MOT with published numbers attached, which makes it one of the few you can have a precise conversation about.

There is no advisory band

In the inspection manual, aim outside the limits is a major defect — it fails. An advisory means the beam was inside the limits but close enough to the edge that the tester wrote it down anyway.

The tester checks the beam without touching the dashboard levelling control. If it reads low because the dial was left down, they re-check with it fully up — so a dial nudged in a car park can cost you.

Bulbs are the failure everybody could have prevented and nobody checks. A rear bulb is invisible from the driver’s seat, which is exactly why it sits there. Walk round the car with the lights on once a month and you have removed one of the most common failures on the test for nothing.

A clouded lens ruins a correctly aimed beam. Aim can be perfect and the light still scattered by a yellowed plastic lens — the tester assesses the beam image as well as its position, so both matter. Restoration is cheap; replacement lamps are not.

And the number plate lamp is the one nobody can see at all. It sits behind you, it never dims as a warning, and it fails silently. Worth knowing that the manual records this as a minor defect rather than an advisory when a plate has more than one lamp and only one has gone — so it appears on your certificate under “repair as soon as possible”, and the car still passes.
