A squeal when braking can be £40 of caliper slide service or £460 of pads and discs. A car that won’t start can be a loose battery terminal or a £580 alternator. The symptom rarely tells you which — but the order you check them in decides what you pay.

The gap between the two columns is the whole point. Nobody can tell you which end you are at from a description alone — but knowing the cheap end exists changes the conversation you have at the counter.

Why the cheapest cause goes first
A garage’s diagnostic order is not the same as yours. Faced with a brake squeal, a busy workshop reasonably reaches for the job that fixes it with certainty — pads and discs. That is not dishonest; it is one visit instead of two, and no comeback. But it means the £40 possibility never gets mentioned, because nobody bills confidently for a maybe.
Cheapest-first costs you a phone call and saves you the difference. The version of the question that works is not “how much for new discs” but “could this be the slides, and can you check before you order parts?” A mechanic with the wheel off answers that in two minutes. If the answer is no, you have lost nothing and you now have a reason to trust the bigger quote.
The middle of the ladder is where most repairs actually land. Neither the free fix nor the disaster: a bearing, a spring, a sensor. That is why the checker shows the full sequence rather than a single number — a range that reads “£40 to £800” tells you nothing, while a ladder tells you what to rule out and in what order.
One caveat worth stating plainly: cheapest-first applies to diagnosis, not to safety. Where a symptom can mean something dangerous, the ladder stops and says so — see when not to diagnose at all below.
Cheap parts that impersonate expensive faults
Almost every expensive repair on our price guides has a cheap understudy that produces a similar symptom. These are worth knowing by name, because naming them at the counter changes what happens next.
The heat shield that sounds like an exhaust. A thin metal shield above the exhaust rattles when its spot welds fail, and it sounds exactly like a failing silencer from inside the car. Bending it back or removing it costs nothing. A full exhaust system runs to £650.
The drop link that sounds like a shock absorber. A worn anti-roll bar drop link knocks over bumps and at low speed, and it is by far the cheapest item in the suspension family. Shocks and arms start at £140 per corner.
The pulley that impersonates an alternator. Many alternators drive through a decoupler pulley that can fail on its own, producing a rattle and charging faults while the alternator itself is fine. Worth asking about before agreeing to the £320–£580 job.
The rear lambda sensor that gets billed as a catalytic converter. A sensor fault and a dead cat trigger overlapping fault codes. The sensor is £80–£200 fitted; the converter is £250–£700 and sometimes only a symptom of what killed it.
The seals and pipes that get billed as injectors. A diesel that smells of fuel or runs rough often has leaking injector seals rather than failed injectors. A leak-off test costs £40–£80 and tells you which; injectors are £150–£350 each.
The battery terminals that get billed as a starter motor. Corroded or loose terminals produce exactly the slow, laboured crank people diagnose as a dying starter motor. Cleaning them is often free with any other work.

Six things to do before you ring the garage
Every one of these costs nothing and makes the diagnosis faster, which on an hourly rate is the same as making it cheaper.
- Record it on your phone Wind the window down, put the phone on the passenger seat and drive until the noise happens. A ten-second clip settles arguments that ten minutes of description cannot. Worth: a mechanic who hears it doesn’t need to reproduce it on your time.
- Write down when it happens, not what it sounds like Cold or warm, braking or not, turning or straight, accelerating or coasting, speed-related or engine-speed-related. Those five answers narrow the field more than any adjective. Worth: “only when turning left at low speed” is nearly a diagnosis on its own.
- Check the obvious levels yourself Oil, coolant, brake fluid. A low coolant level with no visible leak is information; a warning light with everything full is different information. Worth: a top-up can be the whole repair. It also tells you whether to drive there at all.
- Look up your last MOT advisories Free, public and often already naming the part that is now making the noise. See the section below. Worth: an advisory from last year turns a mystery into a confirmation.
- Ask for the diagnosis and the quote as separate steps “Have a look and call me before ordering anything” is a normal, reasonable request. It stops a maybe becoming an invoice. Worth: many garages charge nothing to look when the work follows. Ask which applies.
- Get the cheap suspect named on the quote If the ladder above lists something cheaper than what you have been quoted, ask whether it has been ruled out and how. A written answer is worth more than a verbal one. Worth: this is the single question that moves a quote down rather than up.
When not to diagnose at all
Cheapest-first is a money strategy, and money strategies stop where safety starts. These symptoms are not for working through a ladder — they are for stopping.
Brakes: a pedal that sinks slowly to the floor, or goes hard and long. Both mean the hydraulic system, not the pads.
Steering: sudden heaviness, free play at the wheel, or a clunk you can feel through the rim.
Overheating: the gauge in the red, steam, or a coolant warning that stays on. Driving on a hot engine turns a water pump into a head gasket, and a head gasket into an engine.
Oil pressure: the oil warning light — the one shaped like a can, not the service reminder. Engines die in minutes without pressure, and the distance to the garage is not worth the gamble.
Smoke or a burning smell you can smell inside: pull over somewhere safe first, look second.
Two others belong on the list without quite belonging in that box. A sweet smell with damp carpets is coolant leaking inside the car, which is a repair rather than an emergency — but the same smell with a rising temperature gauge is the emergency above. And a flashing engine management light means something different from a steady one: steady is “get it looked at”, flashing is “stop driving”, because an actively misfiring engine can destroy the catalytic converter within miles.
The free diagnosis you already have
Every MOT advisory is a professional observation about your car, written down, and available to you for nothing. If a tester noted “front brake discs worn, pitted or scored” nine months ago and your car now grinds when braking, the mystery is solved before anybody puts it on a ramp. This is the most under-used diagnostic resource in British motoring, and it is sitting in a public database.
Under-used is not a figure of speech. We followed 145.1 million advisories through the national test record, and 33.4% of them were never repaired — not deferred, never recorded as resolved on any later test that vehicle took. The full analysis also shows what people skip does not match what matters: a suspension note returns as a failure 18.7% of the time against 1.3% for an oil leak recorded as not excessive, and both read about the same on a certificate.
The timing is the other useful part. The median gap between an advisory and the failure it predicts is 376 days — one MOT cycle, almost exactly, and that interval holds across every category we measured. An advisory is not a vague suggestion; it is a dated prediction, and the date is roughly your next test.
Two things to know about reading it. Advisories use fixed official phrasing, which sounds vaguer than it is — our advisory decoder translates the wording into plain English with a price, and there is a full guide behind every phrase it recognises. If your certificate mentions a wheel bearing, a drop link or a worn disc, that is your noise already named by a professional.
An advisory that appears at several consecutive tests without disappearing has almost certainly never been repaired, which makes it the strongest single clue in the record.
What the MOT does not do is diagnose. The tester checks against pass and fail criteria and moves on; nothing in the test looks for the cause of a noise, and plenty of expensive components — clutch, cambelt, flywheel, chain, turbo — are not examined at all. A clean MOT and a healthy car are related, but they are not the same claim.

How do I describe a car noise to a garage?
Describe the conditions, not the sound. When it happens matters far more than what it resembles: cold or warm, braking or not, turning or straight, rising with road speed or with engine speed. A ten-second phone recording with the window down beats any adjective, and takes one journey to get.
Should I pay for a diagnostic check?
Often you shouldn’t have to. Many independents charge nothing to look when the repair follows, and several of our price guides list diagnosis as free or folded into the job. Ask the question directly before booking: is there a diagnostic fee, and is it waived if I have the work done? A dealer diagnostic typically runs £50–£120.
Why do garages quote the most expensive cause first?
Usually because it is the fix that is certain to work. Replacing the whole assembly means one visit and no comeback, which is rational for a busy workshop even when a cheaper repair might have held. It is not the same as being overcharged — but it does mean the cheap option only gets considered if you raise it.
Can I diagnose a car fault myself?
You can narrow it usefully. Checking levels, noting the conditions and looking up your MOT advisories costs nothing and often points at the right area. What you cannot safely do is confirm it — anything requiring a wheel off, a ramp or a pressure test belongs with someone insured to do it.
Is it safe to keep driving with a noise?
It depends entirely which noise. A squeal from the brakes usually gives you days; a grinding that changes when you turn does not. Anything involving the brake pedal, the steering, the temperature gauge or the oil light means stopping rather than driving carefully — see the red flags section above.
Does the same symptom mean the same repair on every car?
No, and this is where generic advice fails. A rear brake noise means pads on one car and drums on another; a rattle at idle means a flywheel on a diesel and something else entirely on a small petrol. Our model pages exist because the answer changes by engine and axle layout.
My warning light went off by itself — do I still need to look?
Yes. A light that clears has almost always stored a fault code, and the underlying condition — an intermittent sensor, a partial blockage, a fuel trim drifting out of range — is still there. Codes are cheap to read and the history they hold is genuinely useful.
Can a phone recording really help the mechanic?
Substantially. The hardest part of any noise diagnosis is reproducing it, and intermittent faults often refuse to appear on a test drive. A clip that captures the noise alongside the speed and the conditions can save an hour of chargeable time.
Which symptoms mean I should stop driving immediately?
A sinking or hard brake pedal, sudden steering play or heaviness, the temperature gauge in the red, the oil pressure light, a flashing engine management light, or smoke and burning smells inside the car. All of these get worse with distance, and several turn a repair into a replacement engine.
Why did two garages give me completely different diagnoses?
Because many symptoms genuinely have several plausible causes, and each workshop starts from what it sees most often. That is a reason to ask both what they ruled out and how, rather than to assume one is dishonest. Where the two quotes differ by hundreds, a third opinion is cheap by comparison.
Does the MOT tell me what’s wrong with my car?
No. The MOT tests against pass and fail criteria at a moment in time; it does not investigate causes and it never inspects the clutch, cambelt, flywheel, chain or turbo. Advisories are still valuable evidence about wear the tester could see, but they are observations rather than a diagnosis.
How much should looking at the car cost me?
