The average UK repair bill is around £597, according to Bumper’s automotive aftersales research — up roughly a quarter in four years. Our own analysis of the national MOT record adds the part the market figures miss: a third of the warnings drivers receive about those repairs are never acted on at all, and the ones they skip are not the ones that matter least.

What a repair actually costs
The headline figure is useful for context and useless for budgeting. Both things are worth saying in the same breath.
Bumper’s aftersales research puts the average UK repair bill at £597, against £473 four years earlier — a rise of around 26%. RAC research found roughly 65% of drivers faced an unexpected repair in the past year, averaging about £650, with three-quarters saying a bill that size would be difficult to absorb. The Association of British Insurers has tracked insurer repair costs rising into the billions per quarter.
Three forces sit behind it. Parts have inflated, and modern parts cost more by design — a windscreen is now a sensor housing, and a replacement with driver-assistance recalibration runs far above the old glass-only price. Labour rates have risen. And complexity keeps growing: coding, calibration and diagnostics are now routine on jobs that once needed none of them. With cars kept longer than ever, the question is not whether a large bill arrives but how much of it is avoidable.
The average is nonetheless the wrong number to plan with. An air-con regas starts around £50; a gearbox rebuild reaches £2,500. Both are “a repair”. What actually determines the figure is the job, the engine and the postcode — which is why the rest of this page is about the spread rather than the middle.
The dealer premium: half as much again for the same work
The least understood number in British motoring is the gap between a franchised dealer and an independent garage for an identical repair.
Independent measurements converge on roughly 40 to 50%. Motoreasy’s analysis of several thousand garages found dealers around 40% dearer, with hourly rates spanning from the mid-thirties at one independent to well over £200 at a prestige dealership — a spread of more than six times across the same country. A CLM fleet study measured £99 an hour at franchised workshops against £56 at independents, widening further inside London.
Our own dealer figures are a convention, not a measurement, and we say so. Every price guide on this site shows a dealer column calculated as one and a half times the independent range. That multiplier is chosen to sit inside the range the studies above measured — it is not derived from dealer invoices we hold, because we do not hold any. Where you see a dealer price on our guides, read it as “roughly what the published research would predict”, not as an observation.
The premium is sometimes worth paying. Dealers are the right choice for warranty claims, safety recalls and genuinely software-bound faults on newer cars. What many drivers still do not know is that UK block exemption rules mean a manufacturer warranty survives independent servicing, provided the schedule is followed and appropriate parts are used — covered in full in our independent versus dealer guide. The postcode lottery
Two garages twenty miles apart can differ by more than 60% on the same hour of the same work.
What Car?’s survey of 279 independent garages found workshops charging £47 an hour in one northern town and £78 in another nearby — a two-thirds difference with no difference in the work. Regionally, London and the South East top every labour-rate table; parts of Scotland, Wales and northern England sit well below, with the cheapest counties averaging under £50 an hour.
Two things follow. A single quote is not information: with spreads this wide it tells you what one garage charges, not what a repair costs. And a national average is close to useless for budgeting — a brake job that is fair at £180 in one region may be equally fair at £320 in another without anyone overcharging. What matters is the fair range for your car in your area.
The blindfold: why overcharging goes unnoticed
Labour is typically half to two-thirds of a repair bill. Most drivers cannot say what they pay for it.
Around 77% of UK motorists say they do not know their garage’s hourly labour rate, more than three in five do not compare prices before authorising work, and close to a third never check the final invoice against the quote. That is a three- or four-figure decision made blind on the single largest line of the bill.
This is information asymmetry rather than carelessness. Garages price in hours and job codes; drivers see one number at the end. Nothing in the traditional repair journey forces the two into daylight — no menu on the wall, no published benchmark for your model. The fix costs nothing and takes one sentence: “what is your hourly rate, and how many hours is this job booked at?”
What Britain actually fails on
This is where our own data starts. Everything below comes from the national test record rather than from survey work.
At the first test, one vehicle in six fails. Across 41.2 million tests on three-year-old vehicles, 15.6% failed — 14.6% of cars and 23.0% of vans. The gap is mileage rather than manufacturing: a working van covers two to three times the annual distance of a private car, and the components an MOT inspects wear on distance. By ten years old, failure rates have doubled and the spread between models is wide. Comparing 144 models at exactly that age, the worst fails 37.8% of tests and the best 17.7%. Almost every published ranking of this kind mixes vehicles of different ages, which mostly measures how old each model’s fleet is rather than anything about the cars — our failure rates by car study holds age fixed and shows how much the order changes when you do.
Fuel type barely matters until you account for the odometer. At ten years old, petrol cars fail 30.5% of tests and diesels 30.2% — effectively identical. The diesels reached that number on 98,908 median miles against 78,322 for petrol, a quarter further. Per mile driven, diesel has the lower failure rate at every age we can measure, which is the reverse of the usual assumption. The warning nobody acts on
Almost nothing on a repair bill arrives without notice. It appears first as an advisory — a line a tester writes while the car is still passing, which nothing obliges anyone to act on.
We followed 145.1 million of those notes through the record. A third were never repaired. Not deferred, not fixed late — never recorded as resolved across the whole of that vehicle’s remaining history. The share climbs steadily with the age of the car, from around a quarter on vehicles under seven to nearly two-fifths past twelve.

Percentages describe the DVSA defect category the advisory belongs to rather than the individual component, so a category figure is an upper bound for any single part within it. Repair ranges are our own independent-garage estimates and are not part of the DVSA data.
The median time between an advisory and the failure it predicts is 376 to 379 days. Not roughly a year: that narrow, in every category we measured.
Those components have nothing in common mechanically. A spring corrodes across winters; a bulb fails in an instant. If the number were measuring wear, the categories would scatter. They do not — which means it is measuring something else entirely: the day people finally book the work, which is the day the next test forces them to.
The ranking is also not the one most drivers expect. A suspension note is fourteen times likelier to end in a failure than an oil leak, and both read about the same in a tester’s language. Our advisory statistics study shows how weakly the skipping matches the consequences.
The deferral multiplier
Postponing feels like saving. The arithmetic disagrees, and the clearest illustration is not ours.
The Motor Ombudsman’s annual workshop survey found around two-thirds of garages expecting drivers to skip vital work, with a substantial minority expecting some customers to abandon cars entirely when the quote exceeds what the vehicle is worth to them. Their own worked example is the cleanest version of the problem: a cambelt changed on schedule is a mid-hundreds job; the same belt failing in service on an interference engine averaged around £5,400 to put right — roughly nine times the original.
The same multiplier logic runs through the rest of the list. Worn pads left grinding take the discs and sometimes a caliper with them. A small coolant leak left to overheat becomes a head gasket job in four figures. A humming wheel bearing left to collapse takes the hub and the ABS sensor.
There is a rational response to affordability pressure, and it is not deferral. It is triage plus price transparency: move the work to an independent where the premium does not buy anything, and spend the budget where the multipliers live — belts, brakes, coolant and tyres. Moving a £900 dealer quote to a £600 independent quote is not cutting corners. It is the same repair at the market price.

Ranges match the guides they link to, each of which prices the job for fifteen models. Three reading notes: ranges are wide because cars differ; the bottom of a range is not automatically the right price, since a cheap cambelt quote may exclude the water pump and tensioners a proper job includes; and labour hours are standardised across the industry, so the honest variables are the hourly rate and the parts. How not to overpay
Six steps, none of which cost anything.
- Know the range before you call.
Thirty seconds with a registration, or a few minutes with a guide. Walking in without a number is how the conversation gets away from you.
- Get two quotes for anything over £300.
With regional spreads above 60%, the second call is the best-paid phone call you will make. Ask both for the same three numbers: hourly rate, booked hours, parts brand and price.
- Treat advisories as a priced to-do list.
The median gap before a failure is one MOT cycle, so an advisory is a dated prediction. Suspension and brake notes belong at the top of the list; an oil leak recorded as not excessive genuinely can wait.
- Use independents for out-of-warranty work.
Block exemption rules protect your warranty through independent servicing done to schedule with appropriate parts. Save the dealer for claims, recalls and software.
- Never defer the multiplier repairs.
Belts, brakes, coolant and tyres are where waiting reliably multiplies the bill, and for two of them the risk is not financial.
- Check the invoice against the quote.
Close to a third of drivers never do. Padding only survives where nobody looks.

What is ours and what is not
Our own figures come from the DVSA MOT testing bulk dataset, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0: 829,654,015 tests and 145,103,213 advisories tracked forward to each vehicle’s later tests, covering Great Britain. Northern Ireland runs a separate system under the DVA and is not included. Every failure rate, conversion rate and mileage figure on this page comes from that record, and the method behind each is set out on the study it links to. The eight studies share one methodology page at our MOT data index.
Our repair prices are independent-garage estimates covering fifteen popular models across 26 repair types, published in full on the linked guides. They are estimates and final quotes come from garages. Where a guide shows a main-dealer figure, that figure is calculated as one and a half times the independent range — a convention chosen to sit inside the 40 to 50% premium measured by the third-party studies cited above. It is not derived from dealer invoices, and should be read as an indication rather than an observation.

The economics are the obvious explanation: the repair stops being worth it relative to the car.
How long after an advisory does the failure arrive?
The median gap is 376 to 379 days in every category we measured — one MOT cycle, almost exactly. The consistency is the interesting part: components as different as a corroding spring and a failed bulb produce the same interval, which suggests the figure is measuring when people book work rather than when parts wear out.
Which advisories matter most?
Suspension by a wide margin: 18.7% of those advisories return as a failure, against 1.3% for an oil leak recorded as not excessive — fourteen times the risk, in language that reads about the same on the certificate. Lamps follow at 14.4% and body or exhaust items at 11.8%.
Are diesels more expensive to keep on the road than petrol cars?
Not on MOT evidence. At ten years old both fail at essentially the same rate — 30.2% against 30.5% — but the diesels reached that number on around a quarter more miles. Per mile driven diesel comes out ahead at every age. The test does not inspect turbochargers, injectors or particulate filters, so this says nothing about the repairs unique to diesels.
Can I use an independent garage without voiding my warranty?
Yes. UK block exemption rules mean a manufacturer warranty survives independent servicing, provided the service schedule is followed and appropriate-quality parts are used. Keep itemised invoices as evidence. Dealers remain the right choice for warranty claims themselves, safety recalls and brand-specific software faults.
Why do two garages quote such different prices?
