A rubber bush or a ball joint in one of the suspension arms has developed movement. It is worn but still within limits, which is what separates this from the version of the same defect that fails the test.

How this reads on your certificate

Nearside and offside. The wording varies by tester but the meaning does not: “nearside front suspension arm pin or bush excessively worn”, “offside rear suspension arm ball joint has slight play”, “suspension arm pin or bush deteriorated”. Nearside is the passenger side of the car, offside the driver’s side.

Slight play versus excessive wear. Slight play is an advisory — movement the tester could measure that has not crossed the threshold. Excessive play is a failure. The tester makes that call with a lever bar while watching the joint under load, so it is a judgement about how far the component moves, not about how it looks.

Three parts, one phrase

  1. The bush — a rubber sleeve where the arm mounts to the car. Perishes with age, heat and salt, and is the most common cause of this advisory. On some cars it can be pressed out and replaced on its own.
  2. The pin — the pivot the bush sits around. Rarely the fault by itself, but a worn bush lets the pin move where it shouldn’t and the two wear together.
  3. The ball joint — the swivel at the outer end of the arm, connecting it to the hub. Play here is more serious than bush play and more often flagged as excessive, because it affects steering directly.

The reason the price varies is that on many modern cars the bush isn’t separately available, or the labour to press it out costs more than a complete arm. The same defect fails the test when the play is judged excessive. There is no published millimetre figure a driver can measure at home — it is the tester’s assessment against the inspection manual, made with the wheel loaded and a lever applied.

What makes this advisory worth acting on is what it takes with it. A worn arm bush changes the geometry at that corner, and altered geometry wears the inner or outer edge of the tyre beside it. Left long enough, the £140–£280 arm becomes an arm plus a tyre worn on one edge, and sometimes the ball joint that took the extra movement as well.

Suspension has the highest conversion rate of any advisory category — nearly one in five returns as a failure, roughly twice the rate of brakes or tyres — and the lowest fix rate of anything measured, at 44.2%. Fewer than half get dealt with.
