How each fuel actually ages
We split 753 million MOT tests by fuel and by the age of the car at test. The pattern is not the one either side of the electric-car argument tends to claim.

National figures from our analysis of the DVSA MOT testing dataset: 753,842,935 tests split by fuel and vehicle age. Sample sizes differ enormously — 499 million petrol tests, 317 million diesel, 9.2 million hybrid and 3.0 million electric — so the electric figures rest on a far smaller and much earlier set of cars. These are national rates, not Bristol rates: the dataset we hold does not identify test location. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Hybrids are best at every single age. Not only when new — at three, five, seven, nine, ten and twelve years. A twelve-year-old hybrid fails less often than a six-year-old petrol. That is the cleanest result in the whole fuel comparison and it rests on 9.2 million tests.
Electric cars start second and climb fastest. 12.1% at three years is comfortably better than petrol, but the rate doubles to 24.6% by twelve years, closing much of the gap on the others. Whatever drives that, it happens faster than it happens to a hybrid.
The MOT does not test the battery, the motor or the power electronics. Nothing here says anything about how an electric drivetrain lasts, because the test never looks at it. What it measures is brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, lights and structure — the parts every car has.
And the sample matters. Three million electric tests against 499 million petrol means these figures come from a small, early population, much of it first-generation cars with little in common with what is sold now. We would not run a headline off that number, and neither should anybody else.
Why an electric car still fails an MOT
Removing the engine removes a long list of failure points and leaves another list untouched. The second list is where the test does its work.
Weight goes through the tyres
Battery packs make electric cars substantially heavier than equivalents, and torque arrives instantly. Tyres wear faster and suspension components carry more load every mile.

Regenerative braking means the friction brakes are used lightly and rarely. Pads last, but discs film over and pit from disuse — a different failure from the one pads normally cause.

Across the whole record, lamps and electrical items produce more outright failures than advisories — the only section besides visibility where that is true. It either works or it does not.

No exhaust, no emissions check, no particulate filter, no EGR valve, no injectors — and those are exactly the components that push young diesels to 17.6%. Remove them and what is left are the mechanical failure points every car shares.
A clean air zone changes the fleet, not the test
Bristol operates a clean air zone covering part of the city. Whatever the current rules are — and they change, so use the council’s own vehicle checker rather than any summary — the effect is on which cars people choose to drive there, not on how those cars are tested.
The MOT is identical for every fuel. Same capped fee, same inspection manual, same criteria for the parts they share. An electric car is tested for brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights and structure exactly as a petrol one is; it simply skips the sections that no longer apply to it.
So the zone shifts the fleet towards fuels that, on this evidence, fail less when young. That is a real effect and worth stating plainly — but it acts on the average age and type of car being presented, not on the standard applied to any individual one.
Booking a service and MOT in Bristol
Check the garage is equipped for your fuel before booking. High-voltage work needs specific training and equipment, so a garage may be perfectly able to do your test and your brakes and not able to touch anything orange-cabled.
Do not pay for a service level that does not apply. A major service is largely combustion items. On an electric car, ask exactly what the schedule contains — brake fluid, coolant, cabin filter and an inspection is often the whole of it, and the price should reflect that.
